Only One Name Matters

Psalm 79:9–10 9 Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: And deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name’s sake. 10 Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is their God? Let him be known among the heathen in our sight By the revenging of the blood of thy servants which is shed.

The right motivation for wanting God to work for us is the glory of His name. That is what Asaph prays when asking God to deliver them and to revenge Israel’s oppression. He says, help us ‘for the glory of thy name. Purge away our sins, for thy name’s sake.’ He asks why the heathen should be allowed to say, ‘Where is their God?’ and he says, ‘Let [God] be known among the heathen in our sight…’

It is a hard concept for we prideful humans to grasp, but the only name that matters is God’s name. He works for us and through us not to build our name but to build His. He is gracious, forgiving, and loving to demonstrate His great name and not because we deserve it.

And, so our chief desire should be the magnification of the Lord’s name in all the earth. He is worthy to be praised and everything we do and desire should be for the Lord to get the glory. What can we do today, and how can we live so that the Lord is glorified?
