Weekly Update – 25/11/2022

Hey folks, I hope that this update finds you well. The weather has gotten much colder here in the South East of London, reminding us that Christmas is just around the corner – it’s an awesome time to be reminded of the Incarnation, that God became flesh so that He (in the person of Christ) could redeem us through the shedding of His precious blood; there would be no cross without His coming as a babe in the cradle. Here’s an update of the things happening here at Downham.

Reminder of Change ing the Weekly Updates

In last week’s update, we mentioned that the Weekly Update Newsletters will be changing to Monthly Update Newsletters in the New Year, and we’re here to just give that reminder out.

Series on 2 Samuel Completed

On Sunday, we completed our series on The Book of Second Samuel. It’s taken almost a full year, and I hope that we are the better for having completed a section of God’s Word. We have seen the good and the bad in King David’s life, however, I want to remind us all that although 2 Samuel tells the narrative of David’s life, the focus is on how God’s character is expressed in His dealings with David. I hope that after having finished the series, we don’t come away thinking “I should be like David” (although there are moral lessons for us to think about), but rather, we should come away with a great understanding of who God is, and respond with awe and worship. If you want to catch up or re-listen to any of the sermons, feel free to visit our YouTube Channel and tune in.

What will we be doing for month of December? For the month of December, we will have one-off messages from the Bible as well as preaching about some Christmas related things. In the New Year, Lord willing, we’ll be starting a new series (more to come in the near future).

Fellowship Outside of Meetings

Meeting with Julian to study the Bible together

One of the things we want to grow in at Downham is living out the Bible. We recognise that this is impossible to achieve if we, as Christians, just meet once or twice a week, seeing each other for a total of maybe 4 hours in that week. In light of that, we want to meet up with each other more, not just for the sake of meeting up but for the purpose of provoking one another to love and good works through reinforcing Bible truths to and with one another, as well as praying together. By no means are we replacing our formal meetings, but we want to recognise that we are called to be in fellowship with one another in formal and informal situations. Pray for us at Downham to grow in this so that we can grow as a people who disciple one another, who encourage one another, and who grow together in our conformity to Christ’s image. Let’s be people who are Biblically spiritual every day, not just Sundays.

Youth Christmas Party

Our Deacon Jeff is organising a Christmas Party for the Youth (and for the young at heart who want to join). It will be on Saturday 10th December. Save the date, spread the news, and more details to follow.

This Weekend:

Saturday – We don’t have our Community Outreach on as we’ve no one to lead it. However, we can still take part in the Great Commission (see Matthew 28:18-20) by sharing the Gospel daily with those around us at work, school, or whatever setting we find ourselves in.

Sunday – Our Deacon Jeff will be doing the Small Groups at 10:30 AM, as well as preaching in the Worship Service at 11:30 AM. Come and be blessed by him as well as blessing him, and ultimately, come and worship the Lord Jesus. This is all followed by our Monthly Bring & Share – so make sure that you bring food to share with everyone, and even if you’re unable to bring anything, turn up anyway and enjoy the fellowship.

Prayer Requests:

  • That we would walk in closer fellowship with the Lord Jesus as individuals and as a church group.
  • That we would hunger for more of God’s word.
  • The Christmas season and the efforts to share the gospel.

That’s all for now. We love you all with the love of the Lord.

Ric
